What tungsten actually is

Tungsten carbide is not tungsten on its own. It is tungsten powder bound with carbon and pressed under enormous heat and pressure until it behaves less like a metal and more like a ceramic. The result sits around 8 to 9 on the Mohs scale, which puts it just below sapphire and far above gold.

What that means on a hand is simple. A gold band picks up a web of fine scratches in its first year and slowly goes soft at the edges. A tungsten band worn for the same year looks much the same as the day it arrived. It also holds a polish rather than dulling, and it will not bend out of round if you grip something heavy.

It is noticeably weighty, too. People who have worn titanium are usually surprised the first time they pick one up — tungsten has real heft, and most men read that as substance rather than a nuisance.
