Can Tungsten Rings Be Resized? What to Do If Yours Doesn't Fit
Share
Short answer: no. A tungsten carbide ring cannot be resized like a gold or silver band. It cannot be stretched, compressed, cut and soldered into a new size. If the fit is wrong, the practical solution is usually an exchange or replacement.
That does not make tungsten a poor choice. Its hardness is one reason it stays highly resistant to everyday scratches. It simply means sizing matters more before you order.
Why tungsten rings cannot be resized
Gold and silver are comparatively workable metals. A jeweller can often cut a conventional band, add or remove material, reshape it and solder it closed.
Tungsten rings are made from tungsten carbide, a very hard material that does not bend and reshape like gold. Under enough force it can fracture rather than deform, so the normal resizing process does not work. Once the ring has been manufactured, its inside diameter is fixed.
Hardness is not the same as toughness. Tungsten carbide is highly resistant to abrasion, but it is not scratch-proof or unbreakable. A strong impact against a hard surface can chip or crack it, and coloured coatings can show wear differently from the underlying material. The Gemological Institute of America describes tungsten as scratch-resistant while also noting that it can crack or shatter under high impact.
Can a tungsten ring be made slightly bigger or smaller?
No permanent alteration is practical. A jeweller cannot safely stretch a tungsten ring larger or compress it smaller. Cutting and rejoining it is not a viable resizing method either.
If the ring is only slightly loose, a removable silicone sizing insert may improve the fit temporarily. It sits inside the band and takes up a small amount of space. Treat it as a short-term aid: it can move, collect moisture or wear out, and it does not replace a correctly sized ring.

If the ring is tight, do not try to force it on and do not add anything inside it. Finger size changes with heat, exercise, salt intake and time of day. A band that already feels tight can become difficult to remove when the finger swells.
Measure before you order
The most reliable starting point is a ring that already fits the intended finger. Measure its inside diameter, or have a jeweller check it. If you are measuring the finger itself, do it more than once at room temperature and include the knuckle.
Band width and inner profile also affect how a ring feels. A wide band may feel tighter than a narrow ring in the same marked size, and a comfort-fit interior may pass over the knuckle differently. If possible, try a sizing ring with a similar width and profile.

Our guide to measuring ring size at home explains the methods and common mistakes. You can also use the ring size guide before ordering.
What if you are between sizes?
Do not automatically choose up or down based on one reading. Repeat the measurement, check the knuckle and review the sizing advice for the specific design. If you can, try a similar-width sizer. When the result is still unclear, contact us before ordering and tell us which model you are considering.
Which HeyWhiskey rings cannot be resized?
The rule applies to every ring built on a tungsten carbide core. That includes our plain tungsten rings and many designs with whiskey-barrel wood, meteorite or guitar-string inlays. The decorative inlay changes the appearance, but it does not make the tungsten core resizable.
Other materials have different properties. Do not assume a Damascus steel or mixed-material ring can be altered later; construction and inlays can still rule out resizing. Ask us about the specific design if future resizing is important to you.
If the size is wrong after delivery
For an eligible unworn ring in its original packaging, you can request a different size within 30 days of delivery, subject to stock availability. We do not charge a restocking fee for an eligible size exchange. Return shipping is the customer’s responsibility when the wrong size was ordered.
Email info@heywhiskey.ca with your order number before sending anything back. We will provide authorization and return instructions. The complete conditions are in our Return & Refund Policy.
If a tungsten ring gets stuck
Do not keep forcing a tight ring over a swollen finger. If the finger becomes painful, numb, discoloured or increasingly swollen, seek urgent medical help.
Tungsten carbide is removed differently from a soft metal band. Medical professionals may use equipment and a method suited to the ring and the injury. Do not try to crack or cut it at home: fragments and pressure can cause further injury. Published clinical research describes several removal techniques, which is another reason to leave the procedure to trained professionals.
Common questions
Can any jeweller resize a tungsten ring?
No. This is a limitation of the material, not the equipment or skill of a particular shop. A jeweller may suggest an exchange, replacement or temporary insert, but that is not true resizing.
Can a cracked tungsten ring be repaired?
Usually no. A cracked or chipped tungsten carbide band is generally replaced rather than welded or reshaped. Contact the seller before discarding it, especially if you believe the damage may qualify under a warranty.
Will tungsten stay completely scratch-free?
No material or finish should be described as impossible to scratch. Tungsten carbide is highly scratch-resistant, but hard impacts can chip it and surface coatings may show wear.
Should I order the average men’s ring size?
No. An average can be a rough reference, but it is not accurate enough for ordering a fixed-size ring. Measure the intended finger or a ring that fits it. Our article on the average men’s ring size explains why size 10 is only a starting point.
Does a comfort-fit interior change the size?
It can change how the ring feels and how it passes over the knuckle. Use the measurement as a starting point, then follow the advice for the specific ring rather than applying an automatic half-size adjustment.
The useful rule is simple: a tungsten ring is chosen in the correct size rather than resized later. Measure carefully, account for the band’s width and profile, and use the exchange window if an eligible unworn ring does not fit.
